Become a Fashionista on Your Own Terms and You'll Curate a Timeless Look

Become a Fashionista on Your Own Terms and You'll Curate a Timeless Look

Fashion is a means to express oneself. By that definition alone, you should ignore the copy-and-pasted looks of the high street and fast fashion conglomerates, and instead focus on defining your own look. Your own sense of style is unique, and wearing what everyone else is wearing diminishes the quality of your wardrobe. If you become a fashionista who aims to curate their own sense of style, rather than follow what the big fashion houses are doing, you’ll be able to curate a timeless look that is unique to you. To achieve this, follow these steps:

1     Clear Out Your Closet
The first step to curating the timeless look is to clear out your closet. Be committed to this spring clean, however, because the more you clear out, the better your wardrobe will be. The fewer clothes you have, the more emphasis you need to put into styling. Styling is the true heart of fashion. Anyone can wear fashionable clothing, but to look good in it, you need to consider everything from the clothes to the accessories, to even your makeup.

Note: Donate clothes before you throw them out. Donations at least have the chance of a second life, whereas if you throw out your clothes, they will join the millions of tons of fabric waste clogging our landfills.

2     Educate Yourself on Fashion
Now, it might seem redundant to educate yourself in fashion, when the exact point of curating your own sense of style is to focus on your own preferences, instead of what everyone else is wearing. Educating yourself in fashion, however, can make you an informed buyer. Following fashion blogs like Beulah London’s blog is also a great way to find inspiration. Beulah London, unlike fast-fashion companies, creates quality pieces that are designed to last. Choose quality over quantity, and you’ll create the perfect wardrobe.

3     Find Unique Designers
Supporting local artists is always a good thing, which is why finding unique designers is the way to go. It is also how you’ll find pieces that speak to you, and ones that are likely not to be found on every fourth person you see walking down the street.

4     Opt for Quality Over Quantity
One of the things you learn when you begin to educate yourself on fashion is exactly how detrimental the fast fashion industry is to the environment, and to society. It has completely changed the way we shop, and the way companies do business. Instead of buying quality pieces that help society, you are instead buying pieces that exploit women in developing nations. That is why when you buy, it is always better to buy quality over quantity. Quality clothes last longer, they are more unique, and they can help you curate a timeless wardrobe.

Being unique is all the rage, but when you aim to be unique, you need to do it right. Don’t accidentally follow what everyone else is doing, focus on what you like. Be critical of the trends that are passing through and focus on key pieces you have loved over the years. Do this, and you’ll create a wardrobe that will last and be fashionable for years to come.

Coral is, hands down, one of my favorite colors.  It's universally-flattering, so you really can't go wrong wearing it.  What a perfect color for spring/summer!

Dress // Rings // Sandals // Purse // Necklace

The older I get, the more I crave simplicity on Easter morning.  The kids' baskets are small and simple.  Breakfast is our usual pancake recipe.  And I prefer a cute dress with flats.  Paired with an adorable purse and eye-catching necklace, we have the makings of a comfortable-during-the-egg-hunt-and-for-the-rest-of-the-day-too outfit.

Essentials: Cardigans

Essentials: Cardigans

I am a lover of cardigans.  It doesn't matter what season it is, you will find me with a cardigan on at some point during the week.  When the weather turns cooler, my love for cardigans gets turned up a notch.  I am on the hunt for some new cardigan for my wardrobe.  I'll be hitting up Goodwill next week to see what I can find, but for now I'm pulling my inspiration from the internet.  Gotta have a plan when I go thrifting!

What is your favorite style of cardigan?  Chunky?  Sleek?  Belted?

Are you already daydreaming about outfits for holiday parties?  I am, and that was the inspiration for this outfit board.  The sparkle, the gold, and the dramatic maxi skirt would be perfect for a holiday party.

Is it too early to be thinking about Christmas parties?

Do you get excited for layering in the fall?  I do!  It's my favorite part of getting dressed during the fall and winter.  Of course, by the time February rolls around I'm sick of it.  But, for now, I'm loving it!

Essentials: Black Boots

Essentials: Black Boots

I don't know if you do this, but at the beginning of each season ... Or, really, whenever there is a major shift in the general temperatures, I take stock of my wardrobe and select a couple items to shop for.  For example, in the summer I tend to look for sandals and skirts.

Last fall, my focus was cognac boots.  I found a great pair at Old Navy.  This year, it was black boots.  I found an awesome pair from Forever 21 that only cost $12.99!  They fit, they're comfortable, and they honestly look good with everything.  But, I'd be lying if my eyes haven't been wondering to others I've seen online...

What are you shopping for right now?

If you've ever been to North Carolina, you'll know that our weather is kind of all over the place.  One day, it's cold and you think it's actually fall.  The next day, you're sweating and blasting the a/c in your car.  This is definitely something I could wear to church.  And if the weather decides to get funky, I'd throw on a cardigan!

What could be better than a simple color palette and an awesome, chunky sweater?

Not much, my friends.   Not much.

I've spoken about  my hesitation to wear lace, but I couldn't not put this dress in an inspiration board!  Although lace makes me nervous (seriously, who doesn't snag it?), it is so pretty to look at.  Gorgeous, vintage-inspired shoes and a classy bag complete this look.  All it needs is some gold jewelry, a waist-cinching belt, and some fun-hued sunglasses.

I may or may not be on a quest to acquire as many dolman-sleeved tops as I can.  They are the most comfortable shirts.  They can be worn many different ways.  Normally, I pair one with leggings or skinny jeans.  I've also worn them tucked into skirts, which is a comfortable alternative to wear to the office.

Do you like dolman sleeves?  I really can't get enough of them.

Top // Heels // Skirt  // Ring // Jacket // Bag

I used to think that clothes with jewels sewn around the neck were a little cheese.  But, now that we're consistently late getting out the door for church, it makes more sense to me.  A mom totally came up with the idea of jewelry on clothing.  No need to rifle around your jewelry box!  Your jewelry's on your clothing!

Have you noticed that a lot of bloggers have been talking about simplifying their wardrobes and using more neutral color palettes?  Yeah, so have I.  I don't know if it's this time of year or the temperature change, but I am craving simplicity in everything right now.  I've been wearing simple color palettes and I am itching to purge my closet yet again.  All I want to wear is an outfit consisting of skinny jeans or leggings, a baggy top, and flats or boots.

Have you been feeling the need to simplify your wardrobe/

Isn't this pop of color gorgeous?  I love nothing more than a nearly neutral outfit with a couple shots of bright color throughout.   It's simple and chic (whoa, did I just use that word?) and it's super easy to put this together when you're frazzledly (new word) getting everyone together for church in the morning.  Which is every Sunday for us.

Are you a hat person?  I'm not.  At least, I don't think I am.  They never look quite right on me, but I'm determined to be a hat person this fall/winter!  You see, I love to knit them so I have a small collection that doesn't get used...  And so it goes, I hope you'll humor me this fall while I attempt to get hat-wearing right!

Dress / Blazer / Sunglasses / Wedges / Satchel

Yesterday, I was feeling cozy and neutral.  Today, I'm feeling a bit summer-y and bright!  I suppose my fashion mood is behaving like the weather -- all over the place.

I love all these colors together.  They are bright and fun without competing for attention.  And those wedges!  My goodness, I want to add those to my closet!

Doesn't this make you feel cozy?  I can't wait for snuggly sweater weather.  Can you believe I haven't ordered a pumpkin spice latte yet?  It just hasn't been cold enough for one yet.  The weather here in NC is still up and down.  It can't decide if it wants to be summer or fall!  As soon as it turns a bit colder, I'll be ordering one tout de suite!

Sunglasses  /  Earrings  /  Bracelet  /  Heels  /  Dress  /  Purse

WARNING: You will need sunglasses to look at this outfit.  I mean, look at it!  (with sunglasses, of course)  I love the vibrant yellow/blue combination so much for summer.  And can we just look at the flowery detailing on the dress?  I would keep the jewelry minimal-ish, but still interesting, and throw in some funky sunglasses to seal the deal!

What's your favorite summer color combination?

Sunglasses  /  Clutch  /  Top  /  Skinnies  /  Flatforms

A couple weeks ago, I purchased some almost-flatforms from Target, and they have been the best addition to my shoe closet in a long time!  I love the height they give me, but they don't kill my feet.  These clog flatforms would be another awesome addition to my closet (alliteration much?), and I would totally do the purse/shoe matchy-matchy thing with this outfit.  The cognac color pairs so well with dark and light grey.  This would be the perfect weekend outfit.  And, hello!  Tall shoes I can chase the kids in!

Dress  /  Earrings  /  Bracelet  /  Messenger Bag  /  Sandals

Let's all take a moment and look at this dress.  I absolutely love the colors, the pleats, the details.  Everything about this screams classy summer dress at me!  You all know my style, keep it simple.  I would add some minimally glitzy earrings and bracelet.  And who could say no to those metallic flats?  The toes of those sandals would be absolutely perfect peeking out under the maxi dress!  Normally, I would pair this dress with a black bag, but don't you think a cream colored bag would be a nice change?
